Understanding Course Surfaces and Friction

Where your ball lands dictates how much momentum it retains golf hit . Recognizing turf types helps you avoid costly miscalculations:

How to Compensate for Wind and Elevation

As you progress past introductory levels, environmental factors will push your ball off its projected target line.

┌───────────────────────────┐ │ ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS │ └─────────────┬─────────────┘ ┌─────────────────────────┴─────────────────────────┐ ▼ ▼ [WIND VELOCITY] [ELEVATION CHANGES] • Tailwinds: Extend carry and rollout • Uphill: Cuts carry short; dead bounce • Headwinds: Reduce carry; steep drop • Downhill: Extends flight; long roll • Crosswinds: Drift ball laterally at apex • Tiered Greens: Accelerates rollout down slopes

Wind Compensation Tactics

The on-screen trajectory guide does not factor in active wind. You must offset your aim manually:

  • Crosswinds: If an arrow shows wind blowing from left to right, angle your aim guide toward the left rough. The wind will catch the ball at the apex of its arc and float it back toward the center of the fairway.
  • Headwinds: Increase your pullback distance by 10% to 20% and use a slightly lower launch angle to punch through the resistance.
  • Tailwinds: Scale back your shot power to avoid overshooting your landing zone, and prepare for extra rollout upon landing.

Elevation Adjustments

  • Hitting Uphill: The rising ground interrupts the ball's natural parabolic arc early. Apply extra power to clear the crest, as the ball will stop dead upon impact.
  • Hitting Downhill: Because the ground drops away, the ball stays airborne longer. Reduce your power by 10% to 15% to keep from sailing past the green into water or hazards.
